THE Art of LITHOPHANE

Lithophane is a traditional hand-engraving technique crafted on
fine bisqué porcelain — a white, unglazed ceramic renowned for its delicate translucency. This exquisite art form was invented by
Paul-Charles-Amable de Bourgoing in Limoges, France, in 1828.

The term lithophane derives from the Greek words “litho” (stone) and “phanos” (light), together meaning “a stone that lets light through.”

By skillfully varying the thickness of the porcelain, artisans create intricate designs that come to life when illuminated from behind. As light passes through the delicate relief, the image emerges in subtle shades of
light and shadow — a captivating interplay that transforms a simple porcelain panel into a luminous work of art.

What Is Bisqué Porcelain?

Bisqué porcelain, also known as biscuit porcelain, refers to unglazed, white porcelain
that has been fired twice to achieve its distinctive matte finish and fine
texture. It is prized for its smooth, velvety surface, which beautifully
reveals the precision of hand engraving.
